چکیده

Maxwell’s ”finite being” was born in 1867, as one ”who knows the paths and velocities of all the molecules” ([7], p.213), and who, unlike us, is ”clever enough” ([7], p.213), and can violate the second law of thermodynamics. It was baptized as a demon by Lord Kelvin ([7], p. 214), and ever since has fueled the discussions in the foundations of statistical mechanics. Since its inception, and contrary to Maxwell’s own intention, the demon has suffered numerous exorcism attempts, physical and information– theoretic,1 all aiming to demonstrate that it cannot achieve its goal; all culminating in (or, more precisely, starting from) the common belief that the second law of thermodynamics is an a priori truth. In their monograph The Road to Maxwell’s Demon, Hemmo & Shenker put an end to this long tradition of exorcism, and argue convincingly that under a very mild assumption, common to classical and quantum mechanics, namely, the deterministic character of the dynamics,2 the demon is consistent with both mechanics and statistical mechanics. They do so by painstakingly leading their readers through simple constructions that allow them to depict statistical mechanics as a theory based on three ingredients: (a) deterministic micro–dynamics on phase space, (b) a partition

Nested sampling with demons

This article looks at Skilling’s nested sampling from a physical perspective and interprets it as a microcanonical demon algorithm. Using key quantities of statistical physics we investigate the performance of nested sampling on complex systems such as Ising, Potts and protein models. We show that releasing multiple demons helps to smooth the truncated prior and eases sampling from it because t...

A Study on Robustness of Various Deformable Image Registration Algorithms on Image Reconstruction Using 4DCT Thoracic Images

Background: Medical image interpolation is recently introduced as a helpful tool to obtain further information via initial available images taken by tomography systems. To do this, deformable image registration algorithms are mainly utilized to perform image interpolation using tomography images.Materials and Methods: In this work, 4DCT thoracic images of five real patients provided by DI...

Evaluation of GMI and PMI diffeomorphic‐based demons algorithms for aligning PET and CT Images

Fusion of anatomic information in computed tomography (CT) and functional information in 18F-FDG positron emission tomography (PET) is crucial for accurate differentiation of tumor from benign masses, designing radiotherapy treatment plan and staging of cancer. Although current PET and CT images can be acquired from combined 18F-FDG PET/CT scanner, the two acquisitions are scanned separately an...

Demons deformable registration for CBCT-guided procedures in the head and neck: convergence and accuracy.

PURPOSE The accuracy and convergence behavior of a variant of the Demons deformable registration algorithm were investigated for use in cone-beam CT (CBCT)-guided procedures of the head and neck. Online use of deformable registration for guidance of therapeutic procedures such as image-guided surgery or radiation therapy places trade-offs on accuracy and computational expense. This work describ...

A contour-guided deformable image registration algorithm for adaptive radiotherapy.

In adaptive radiotherapy, deformable image registration is often conducted between the planning CT and treatment CT (or cone beam CT) to generate a deformation vector field (DVF) for dose accumulation and contour propagation. The auto-propagated contours on the treatment CT may contain relatively large errors, especially in low-contrast regions. A clinician's inspection and editing of the propa...

Implementation and evaluation of various demons deformable image registration algorithms on a GPU.

Online adaptive radiation therapy (ART) promises the ability to deliver an optimal treatment in response to daily patient anatomic variation. A major technical barrier for the clinical implementation of online ART is the requirement of rapid image segmentation. Deformable image registration (DIR) has been used as an automated segmentation method to transfer tumor/organ contours from the plannin...
